Year 2

Learning in Year Two this half term:

In English we have started the half term by continuing our work on The Tunnel. The children are learning a tralk for writing piece of narrative that they will have the opportunity to develop and improve as the unit moves on. The children will also be investigating the artwork of John Atkinson Grimshaw this half term, a local artist who painted night time scenes of urban landscapes in the Victorian era. Children will have the opportunity to write about their experiences with a painting they are studying. Finally children will move on to write a diary piece about how life was different in the past. These time capsules will give the children the chance to write as a Victorian child. In reading, Children will practise skills retrieving information and understanding tricky questions by working with our new class novel ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ by Enid Blyton.

In Maths we are working on problem solving and children will have lots of opportunities to apply their four operations skills to tricky problems on measure, temperature and money. Children will also have the opportunity to decode picture graphs and analyse data, finding out ways to use data in problem solving activities.

In Science we will be looking at Peculiar Plants. The children will have the opportunity to investigate the different ways that seeds disperse and make models of their own seeds to observe closely at the features of Sycamore and Burr seeds. Children will also plant seeds and observe and record changes over time!

Our topic is called ‘Street Detectives’ where we will be looking at changes over time. The children will think and talk about images of the local area over time and develop historical enquiry skills by comparing and making observations. Children will also go on a local walk and map their experience, coming back to look at maps more closely in the classroom.

In RE we are learning about ‘Salvation’and thinking about why Easter is such an important time for Christians. The children will have the opportunity to learn about the Easter story in more depth and begin responding to big questions about the concept of Jesus as the saviour in church worship.
