Year 2

Learning in Year Two this half term:

English

In English this half term, we will find a mysterious tunnel outside our classroom! We will have to decide whether or not we are brave enough to adventure through and justify our reasons using the subordinate conjunction ‘because’. We will then begin our book (aptly named ‘The Tunnel’!) and explore the characters and setting before writing an alternative ending to the story. We will also be linking our English to our Topic this half term, and will write instructions for how to care for minibeasts and write some poetry about the different insects that live in our world.

Maths

We will start this half term off by further consolidating our place value knowledge.  We will count to 100 through different steps, including counting up in tens and we will also look at comparing numbers using our place-value knowledge and go through number bonds. We will then utilise our place-value knowledge to help us with our addition and subtraction using number bond diagrams as well as the standard column method. As well as this, we will focus on what multiplication means, patterns in multiplication and begin to understand what is meant by commutative law. We will be looking at multiplication of 2, 5 and10.

Topic

Our topic this half term is ‘Wriggle and Crawl’ where we will go out and about on a minibeast hunt! We will lift up logs to see who’s home and set up our own minibeast laboratory and observe their every move, just like a real entomologist!

Science

Science will be heavily linked with our Topic this half term, focusing on the anatomy of minibeasts and exploring who eats who! We will be working scientifically to found out more information about these creatures, such as how far a snail travels in a day and how a spider catches it prey.

RE

This half term, we will be considering what Christians believe God is like. We will learn what a parable is, listen to the story of the Lost Son and think about God as the forgiving Father. We will then be able to Give an example of how Christians put their beliefs into practice in worship; by saying sorry to God, for example.
