A warm welcome to Year 5 for all pupils, parents and carers. This year promises to be an excellent year and is helped along by some fantastic topics. Our first topic this half term is titled, ‘Darwin’s Delights.’
Darwin’s Delights focuses on the famous, Charles Darwin and his journey of discovery aboard the HMS Beagle.
We’re going to investigate, sketch and detail a range of specimens and natural items much like Charles Darwin once did. Using a range of non-fiction books and resources, we’ll also investigate adaptation, natural selection and inheritance.
Maps and globes will help us mark out Darwin’s expedition and consider the animal and physical and man-made features we might encounter? We’ll also think about why the Galapagos Islands developed such diverse animal life, and why they might be under threat. At the end of our topic, we’ll be inviting parents and carers into school to enjoy our very ownDarwin Exhibition. Here, we will showcase our learning, knowledge and what we’ve discovered.
In English by recapping the different word classes; particularly focusing on nouns, verbs and conjunctions. There will also be a focus on quality handwriting, spelling and presentation. Once immersed in our topic, we will apply our writing skills to help explain natural selection and adaptation. There will also be opportunities to write in the role of Charles Darwin.
Our class book, this half term, is Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis. This lovely book will capture the children’s imagination as we get to know Callum – the lead character – andIris, the endangered osprey who’s made her nest nearby.
In Maths, we’ll begin with place value and learning to read and write numbers up to 1,000,000. We’ll then compare, order and round numbers up to 1,000,000. From here, we’ll look at number patterns, before moving onto the addition and subtraction of numbers up to 1,000,000.
There will be opportunities throughout the half term for pupils to develop their reasoning, problem solving and mental maths skills.
In R.E. this year, our religious focus will be Christianity with the key question, ‘What does it mean if God is holy and loving?’ Pupils will explore the relationship and bond individuals have with their God, and they came to establish this.
Our topic, Darwin’s Delights has a number of scientific concepts for the children to enjoy. From exploring natural selection and inheritance to investigating the adaptation of bird’s beaks, there’s sure to be lots to ponder.
There will be opportunities throughout the half term for pupils to develop a range of scientific skills: fair testing, scientific enquiry, planning and recording data.
