Safeguarding

NSPCC’s 'Speak out. Stay safe.' programme

At St. Chad’s CofE Primary School, safeguarding and child protection is our first priority. Part of our commitment to this is proactively teaching the children how to keep themselves safe in an age-appropriate way by participating in the NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. programme.

Stay safe. programme.

Speak out. Stay safe. is a child-friendly safeguarding programme, which aims to help children understand abuse in all its forms and to recognise the signs of abuse in a child-friendly way. Children are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a trusted adult or to Childline.

The programme consists of an online assembly for KS1 and a separate assembly for KS2, followed by supporting classroom-based activities delivered by your child’s class teacher. In the online assembly, the Speak out. Stay safe. messages are delivered in a fun and interactive way with the help of a mascot, Buddy, as well as special guest appearances from Ant and Dec.

Years 5 and 6 had the added benefit of a workshop delivered by specially trained NSPCC volunteers, alongside class teachers, to build on and deepen their learning gained from the assembly.

By the end of the programme, our children felt empowered – knowing how they can speak out and stay safe.

Here are some quotes from the children:

  • If anyone hurts my feelings or hits me, I will tell them, “Buddy says that’s not okay!” – Year 1 child
  • I have the right to speak out and stay safe! – Year 3 child
  • I know the Childline number off-by-heart now! The actions make it easy to remember and it doesn’t cost any money. – Year 4 child
  • I now know the different forms of abuse, like neglect, physical abuse and emotional abuse and that if this happens it is never my fault. I feel safe to talk to an adult about this without worrying I might be in trouble – Year 6 child

If you would like to know more about the Speak out. Stay safe. programme, you can find information on the NSPCC website

Adapted assembly for home use

The NSPCC has also developed an adapted version of their assembly for parents/carers to use at home with their children.  This can be found here. With the help of celebrities, the film focuses on how a child can get support if they have any worries or concerns.

To complement the assembly, there are some resources that can be used to enable further discussion whilst doing activities with your children.  These are hosted on the NSPCC website.
